Director Anudeep delivered a sensational hit with “Jathi Ratnalu” last year. “First Day First Show” is made with his story. Megastar Chiranjeevi also graced as the guest for this film’s event. All of these have brought this small film into focus.

Let’s find out.

Story:
Circa 2000. Seenu (Srikanth Reddy) falls for his college beauty Laya (Sanchita). To win her love, he needs to do an impossible task: get tickets for Pawan Kalyan’s “Kushi” on the first day for Laya.

Will he successfully get tickets on the first day first show for a film arriving in the theaters amidst high expectations? Will he win her love?

Artistes’ Performances:
The film features newcomers or budding actors in the main roles. The lead actor Srikanth Reddy fails to pull the role. Sanchita gets a cameo appearance.

Vennela Kishore takes the burden of sustaining the interest. To some extent, his comedy is the only one worth mentioning.

Technical Excellence:
Made on a low budget, the film has appropriate production and technical qualities. One song “Nee Navve” stands out. Writing and editing are below par.

Highlights:
A song and a few scenes

Drawback:
Silly script
Bland screenplay
Repetitiveness
Humorless comedy

Analysis
What happens when an idea worth a short film gets extended to a two-hour feature film? The answer is “First Day First Show”. Since Anudeep writes the story, we have to compare this film with his directorial blockbuster “Jathi Ratnalu”.

Though Anudeep is not involved in the direction, the thematic similarities and narrative structure can be noticed here well. The attempt to pay tribute to cinema culture in the Telugu states is appreciable. But a film needs to go beyond that.

But everything is ludicrous in this film. Nothing happens in the film, except random scenes and repetitive comedy sequences keep coming. The heroine disappears after the initial sequences. Also, the main thread takes a backseat.

In the name of comedy and simplicity, the new directors have made an amateurish film. Writer Anudeep’s strength is generating humor with simple situations, but the comedy falls flat here.

The small-town situations and the dialogue-oriented comedy bring a feeling of Deja Vu. What we see in the first half gets repeated in the second half, too. Vennela Kishore’s comedy track provides laughs initially, but after a point, his comedy also sounds silly.

The film is an attempt to cash in on the success of “Jathi Ratnalu”. It may not even be worth watching on an OTT platform. Despite crisp runtime, it tests our patience with its repetitive sequences and poor directorial and narrative skills.

Bottom line: Terrible!
