In a startling development, Rani Kapur — mother of late businessman Sunjay Kapur and former mother-in-law of actress Karisma Kapoor — has alleged that her son died under suspicious circumstances and accused unnamed individuals of trying to seize control of the family business, Sona Comstar, while she was grieving.
In a letter addressed to the Board of Directors and shareholders of Sona Comstar ahead of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for July 25, Rani Kapur urged that the meeting be deferred by at least two weeks.
She stated that as per the will of her late husband, Dr. Surinder Kapur (founder of Sona Group), she is the majority shareholder and sole representative of the family’s interests.
“Mr. Sunjay Kapur tragically passed away under highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances in the United Kingdom,” she wrote. “Despite all attempts, I am yet to receive any clarity or official documentation about my son’s death.”
Rani Kapur further claimed that during her period of mourning, she was repeatedly approached and compelled to sign documents “behind locked doors” without explanation.
“I was under immense mental and emotional distress and was not allowed the time to read or understand the documents. Even today, despite my repeated requests, their contents have not been disclosed to me,” she added.
She accused certain individuals — allegedly including Sunjay’s second wife Priya Sachdev — of exploiting the situation to assert control over the company.
“It is unfortunate that while the family is still in mourning, some people have chosen this moment to usurp the legacy of the family,” she wrote.
Sunjay Kapur, 53, died of a heart attack during a polo match in England on June 12. He served as Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, a leading auto component manufacturer.
Just days after his death, the board appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as the new Chairman on June 23, a move now under scrutiny following Rani Kapur’s letter.
