Kuberaa has left director Sekhar Kammula with mixed emotions. While the Telugu version performed reasonably well and managed decent business in its first week, the overall budget recovery remains questionable.
The film saw modest collections in its second weekend, ultimately ending up as an average success in Telugu — not a blockbuster.
What truly came as a shock was the dismal performance of the Tamil version.
In Tamil Nadu, the film struggled badly, failing to even cross ₹20 crore in gross collections. By all accounts, it was a disaster in that market.
On the other hand, the film struck gold overseas, grossing nearly $2.2 million by the end of its second weekend. This indicates that while Sekhar Kammula continues to enjoy strong support in international markets, his core strength remains the Telugu audience.
Many believe that had Kuberaa featured his trademark musical appeal — like the memorable soundtracks of Fidaa and Love Story — its performance in Telugu could have been even stronger.
Given the results, Kammula is now likely to focus on making films specifically for the Telugu market with Telugu stars. The pan-Indian approach may not align with his storytelling style and sensibilities.
