Rajamouli's Varanasi: Title Controversy Resolved

Rajamouli's Varanasi: Title Controversy Resolved

SS Rajamouli recently unveiled the title of his globe-trotting adventure drama as Varanasi.

Starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, the title announcement was made at a grand event and drew widespread global attention.

However, a title dispute soon surfaced. Another production house had already reserved the title Varanasi with the Telugu Film Chamber long ago.

As per regulations, similar titles cannot be approved, but Rajamouli reportedly leveraged procedural gaps to secure the registration.

After the original registrant objected and escalated the issue to the chamber, the matter has now been settled.

The production house will retain the title for the Telugu version, while Rajamouli’s team will use “Rajamouli’s Varanasi” in Telugu. For other languages, the film will release simply as “Varanasi.”

A similar situation arose earlier with Mahesh Babu’s Khaleja, which had to be retitled Mahesh Khaleja due to a title conflict.

Now, Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s film finds itself navigating the same terrain.
