The general belief in the cinema industry is that when remakes are made the chances of success are high because it is a proven script and has already created a positive wave among the audience. To a large extent this formula has worked too.
However, there is a fine line when it comes to adapting the script for a remake and actually lifting and shifting it. Above all, it also matters who did the original and who is doing the remake.
That seems to be the case with the latest online release ‘Laxmii’ earlier titled as ‘Laxmi Bomb’. This has charming star Akshay Kumar in the lead and it is the remake of the Tamil blockbuster ‘Kanchana’ featuring Raghava Lawrence.
The original had such a huge response that already three parts have come. However, it appears that the Hindi remake took off on a slippery footing and by the time it exploded, everything went wrong.
‘Laxmii’ has been met with some really negative response and netizens across the nation are trashing it like never before. This has got the analysts to use their grey cells to do the post mortem.
According to them, it worked for Lawrence but not for Akshay. Also, instead of following the original script, Akshay tried something tacky and out of the box.
Due to that, the emotional graph didn’t work. Secondly, when ‘Kanchana’ hit the screens in south, the expectations were below average and post release it got an above average talk which led to its huge success.
But in the case of ‘Laxmii’ with the names of Akshay Kumar attaching and the huge propaganda that happened in terms of its buying, the expectations went overboard.
Thirdly, the dilution of the original content has ended up in audience interpreting the intent in a different way.
The film (and Akshay) is now being blasted by the Twitterati citing it is totally Hinduphobic and it is an absolute mockery of transgender community.
Some also felt it has a totally misandrist approach and the final touch, they stated Akshay and heroine Kiara looked like father-daughter than a romantic pair.
All in all, the film has failed to create any impact and it would take a while before Akshay recovers from this ‘Bomb’.
