Actor Calls Himself ‘Highest Paid Unpaid Actor’

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has often expressed disappointment with his recent experiences in Bollywood, is finding new creative energy in the South Indian film industry after relocating to Bengaluru.

Speaking at a recent event, Kashyap opened up about his acting journey — particularly in South Indian films — and how much he’s enjoying it.

He credited Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi for encouraging him to take up a role in Maharaja (2024).

Recalling their conversation, Anurag said, “He [Vijay] told me there’s this amazing story. I replied, ‘I have to get my daughter [Aaliyah Kashyap] married, and I don’t think I can afford it.’ Vijay just said, ‘We’ll help you.’ And that’s how Maharaja happened.”

Though he once considered himself a “terrible” actor and “not made for cinema,” Kashyap admitted that he’s grown to love acting — especially during what he called a broader filmmaking crisis.

His acting debut came with Akira (2016), starring Sonakshi Sinha, a role he took to clear debts. He jokingly referred to himself as the “highest paid unpaid debut actor.”

Kashyap’s shift to the South industry seems to have reignited his passion—this time, in front of the camera.
