The third installment of Drishyam, starring Mohanlal, has officially been announced, with director Jeethu Joseph back at the helm.
The Drishyam franchise has enjoyed massive success across languages — remade in Telugu with Venkatesh, in Hindi with Ajay Devgn, and in Tamil with Kamal Haasan, with all versions proving to be blockbusters.
While the first and second parts were remade in multiple languages, only the Hindi version of Drishyam 2 saw a theatrical release outside Malayalam.
Now, Mohanlal is set to return as Georgekutty in Drishyam 3, and the Malayalam makers are planning a pan-India release with dubbed versions in all major languages, keeping Mohanlal in the lead across the board.
Despite this pan-India strategy, Ajay Devgn has decided to go ahead with his own Hindi remake of Drishyam 3, collaborating with his team from the earlier films.
He reportedly believes that a dubbed version of the Malayalam film may not resonate with Hindi audiences, given the massive popularity of the Hindi remakes in the North.
However, Telugu star Venkatesh finds himself without an option. With the Malayalam version releasing across India and no plans for a separate Telugu remake, Venkatesh is unlikely to reprise his role as Rambabu in a standalone version of Drishyam 3.
This divergence in approach reflects a larger trend in Indian cinema — while some filmmakers are embracing pan-India releases, others prefer localized remakes tailored to specific regional sensibilities.
