'Virginity Is No More A Big Deal'

Though it is more like an issue of a tissue in the western countries and other parts of the world, the aspect of virginity holds a lot of value in the Indian society…..or at least it was once upon a time.

The culture and values that Indians have been brought up with and the norms of the society deemed virginity as an important aspect for women and it was an issue of integrity and character too. However, those days of societal norms seem to have gone down the drain now and this is an inference that we gathered after speaking to members of different age groups and different walks of life.

“Virginity is not a big deal these days among girls. And the girls is not considered to be character-less as long as she is dedicated to one man”, says Vipul Kumar, an MCA Student.

On the contrary, Avani, a degree student says, “Girls never tend to make friendship to flirt. Flirting happens unknowingly. And the word ‘flirting’ is not equivalent to ‘losing virginity’. There is thin line between the two”.

“Boy friend culture should be stopped to develop value on virginity. Girls and boys these days are considering that sex is just part of life and adding no value to it. We sometimes don’t understand whether they are thinking with immaturity or with over maturity. However, the values those were taught for our generation for years together wouldn’t allow to accept this ‘losing virginity before marriage’ concept”, says Anasuya, a lecturer in English.

The opinion of a group of other college students has been quite mixed with some saying that virginity is surely a factor to consider while others said that it does not matter anymore. On the other hand, there were the housewives who said that no matter how modern our thinking may be, there are still certain values and ethics that need to be upheld and it definitely is a test of character for any woman.

Negating this are the group of professors and other professionals from the practical work aspects who say that virginity is not a big deal anymore since what is more important for a successful relationship is commitment and dedication after marriage. There are those who say that the media influence is also one key element which has been creating an impact on the current generation.

With girls getting into sports and other physical activities, the outlook of those orthodox individuals has to change towards the virginity. At the same time, that does not mean that women or men for that matter go sleeping around since it is a question of morality, ethics. If that happens, then it must be said that there is no more difference between a human being and an animal.

On a typical Indian side, virginity has been one aspect that has laid a foundation for a strong and trustworthy relationship at least among the middle class society which forms the major chunk of the Indian population.
