Trump wrongly tweets '138 million' killed in SL blasts

Washington: United States President Donald Trump, who is infamous for making gaffes, be it typos in his tweets or blunders during speeches, made another faux pas on Sunday while expressing his condolences to those affected in the multiple bomb blasts in Sri Lanka.

In his condolence message, the US President tweeted the wrong figure of the death toll in the serial blasts as “138 million”.

It is pertinent to mention that the current population of Sri Lanka is around 21 million, based on the latest United Nations estimates.

“Heartfelt condolences from the people of the United States to the people of Sri Lanka on the horrible terrorist attacks on churches and hotels that have killed at least 138 million people and badly injured 600 more. We stand ready to help,” he said in the tweet.

Trump later deleted this tweet and posted a new one, removing “million” from the death toll.

Earlier today, eight bomb blasts in churches and hotels in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa rocked the island nation on Easter Sunday.

As per the latest reports, at least 207 people have been killed and 450 others were injured in the serials blasts. Sri Lankan Defence Ministry said so far seven people have been arrested in connection with serial blasts.
