Just days after expressing interest in becoming Pope, U.S. President Donald Trump ignited controversy by posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal attire.
The now-viral image, shared on his Truth Social account and later by the White House on X (formerly Twitter), shows Trump seated on a coronation chair wearing ceremonial papal robes.
While some social media users saw the image as humorous, others criticized it as inappropriate — especially in light of Pope Francis’s recent passing.
Several users accused Trump of mocking religion and showing a lack of sensitivity.
One user wrote, "So is mockery of religion okay when Trump does it?"
Another commented, "Posting this image right after the Pope’s death is disrespectful. It’s not funny. It’s arrogant and childish behavior unbecoming of a President."
Others defended Trump’s post, dismissing the backlash. "Only those who worship the Pope are offended. It’s just another costume," one user argued.
The controversy follows Trump’s bold remark during a rally marking his first 100 days in office. Speaking to reporters, he said, "I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice."
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham weighed in on X, saying, "I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope."
Pope Francis, 88, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. The conclave to elect the next Pope is scheduled to begin next week.
