Preventive Care for Visiting Parents: What to Keep in Mind

As more Indians settle in America, we are hearing an increasing number of health-related incidents — some, unfortunately, resulting in loss of life.

While we cannot bring back our loved ones, we can certainly take practical precautions to help prevent such tragedies.

Recently, there has been a rise in incidents involving visiting parents who faced health complications due to sudden changes in environment, routine, and lifestyle.

To begin with, the long journey to the U.S. can be overwhelming. Hours of sitting without movement can be risky, especially for people with pre-existing conditions like hypertension or cardiovascular issues.

Encourage parents to walk around when possible, stretch, and use the restroom regularly. And most importantly — never hesitate to ask for assistance. The airline staff is there to help.

Ensure they bring sufficient medications, ideally with prescriptions covering at least six months. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Light exercise or daily walks during their stay can help keep them active and healthy.

Be patient and considerate of their emotional needs. They are far from home, adjusting to a new place, and may feel mentally unsettled. Talk to them, listen to them, and reassure them.

Take them out to explore new places, but avoid long drives that may strain them physically or cause discomfort.

Ultimately, the visit should be enjoyable and memorable — not stressful. A little planning, awareness, and care can make a big difference and may even save a life!
