
Telugu NRI's in Singapore have celebrated the Sankranthi festival in a big way on 17th Evening through the "Sankranthi Sambaralu" event organised by the Singapore Telugu Samajam (STS). The whole event was organized with a native Andhra touch and every aspect right from the decoration of the stage to the cuisine was served up in the most traditional way. The stage was decorated using "maamidaakulu", flowers, "cheruku geddalu", and gobbemmalu made from real cow dung.
The ladies came up with colourful muggulu that stood as the center of attraction for all the visitors who came for the event. The cultural programmes which lasted for about 4 hours comprised of native Telugu padhyaalu, songs, jaanapada dances mimicry etc. All the visitors both young and old thoroughly enjoyed themselves and participated with enthusiasm in the proceedings.
Tasty native Telugu fare was served to all the guests including Ariselu, Bobbatlu, gaarelu etc. Most of the food was home-made and was prepared by the STS members themselves. Prizes like DVD players and rice cookers were given away to Thambola winners. Prizes were also given for the best muggu and for the best dressed Lady and best dressed Gentleman of the evening.
The biggest attraction of the evening proved to be the Grand Bumper draw in which a family won the chance to spend 2 days at the Mayang Sari Resort free of cost.
Giving the vote of thanks, The Singapore Telugu Samajam President Mr.Arimilli Radhakrishna thanked one and all for making the program a huge success. He also reminded the members about the various efforts that were on to bring Telugu T.V. Channels to Singapore and explained that discussions had been initiated with the A.P. State Govt. The members' continued support to the effort was requested and Mr. Radhakrishna has requested all the NRI's who had not yet signed the petition to sign it at the Singapore Telugu Samajam website.
All the guests were happy to celebrate the festival in such a grand and traditional manner.
