Mindvalley CEO Vishen Lakhiani has raised alarm over what he describes as growing xenophobia in the United States, after claiming that he was stopped and questioned by the FBI at a US airport despite holding a valid O-1 visa — a category reserved for individuals with extraordinary ability.
In a detailed Instagram post, the Malaysian-born entrepreneur of Indian origin said the incident left him “dreading” visits to a country he once deeply admired.
Lakhiani noted that he has contributed to the US economy for more than two decades, paid American taxes for 22 years, and runs a global company with 230 employees.
He criticised the rise of fear-driven political narratives targeting immigrants, saying the US is becoming “closed and narrow-minded,” driven by leaders who “blame immigrants instead of offering real solutions.”
Lakhiani expressed hope that the upcoming US elections would bring positive change.
His remarks quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate about immigration policies, airport security checks, and the current political climate. His video crossed one million views, amplified by his strong Instagram following.
Many supporters shared similar experiences, while others claimed that strict airport screenings affect all international travellers, regardless of their visa category.
One user wrote: “Yes! That’s exactly why I left, even though I also had a talent visa. I couldn’t live there anymore — it gave me anxiety.”
Another commented: “I love America, but I’ve decided not to visit for the next few years because racial profiling is real.”
A third user expressed solidarity: “I’m so sorry, Vishen. Your experience doesn’t represent how all of us feel. ICE and those agents should reflect on their behaviour. Travel safe, my friend.”
The incident highlights growing concerns about how political rhetoric is shaping the experiences of foreign professionals, entrepreneurs, and long-term contributors entering the United States.
