WASHINGTON: A 26-year-old Indian-origin youth working at a convenience store in the US was shot dead by robbers, sending shock waves among the community who are baffled by the "insensitivity" of shoppers who made no attempt to help him or call the police.
Gurjeet Singh of Gary, Indiana, who worked as a clerk in the store attached to his uncle Randy's gas station, was killed on June 14.
Police have released a video captured by the shop's surveillance cameras which shows four men entering the Gary mini mart and gas station. One of them was seen rushing to the counter behind which Gurjeet was working, though the shooting itself was not captured.
Community activists have expressed outrage over the senseless murder and "insensitive and shocking" behaviour of shoppers who made no effort to help him or call the police after the incident.
While Gurjeet lay dying, shoppers continued to walk in and out of the store, the video released by police shows.
"Any time you see a crime and don't report it, that's bad enough, but when you see a violent act of this magnitude and don't call attention to it, that says something about your soul," Gary detective James Bond was quoted as saying.
