On the face of it, a political agitation may not have anything to do with a competitive examination.
However, a closer look at the EAMCET results, declared on Wednesday, shows that the students from Telangana region were affected by the disturbances in the region because of the statehood movement.
The first rankers in both the Engineering and Medicine streams are from Vijayawada. An overwhelming majority of the top ranks in both the streams have gone to the students from coastal Andhra region. Only one out of the top ten ranks in the medicine category belongs to Telangana.
The frequent disruptions, shutdowns and boycott calls appear to have affected the pace of preparation as far as students from Telangana region is concerned. Generally, the students from Hyderabad garner the top honours in EAMCET every year. This is attributed to better facilities, infrastructure and availability of quality faculty in the city.
However, this year has turned out to be different. The students from coastal districts had a field day and virtually swept the top ranks. Five out of the top ten ranks in Engineering have goven to students from Vijayawada. While boys dominated the scene in Engineering, the girls grabbed the ten ranks in medicine stream.
With 158 marks out of 159, Mandalapu Himaja from Vijayawada stood first in the medicine stream, Nalla Pratyush, also from Vijayawada, bagged first rank in engineering with 155 marks.
