Exemptions from H-1B Visa Fees Could Include Doctors

Exemptions from H-1B Visa Fees Could Include Doctors

Physicians may be among those exempted from the newly announced $100,000 H-1B visa fee, according to a report on Monday.

The development comes just days after the White House unveiled the controversial fee hike, sparking widespread concern among foreign professionals and employers who depend on skilled immigrant workers.

A Bloomberg reporter stated on X that the White House intends to provide "case-by-case exemptions if in the national interest." White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers confirmed that doctors could fall under the exemption category.

The announcement has drawn attention at a time when the U.S. healthcare system continues to face a shortage of medical professionals, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Industry experts believe exempting physicians would help ensure that the new policy does not worsen the already critical staffing gaps in hospitals and clinics.

While the broader fee structure is designed to reduce dependence on foreign workers and push companies toward hiring more American talent, the possibility of exemptions highlights the administration’s recognition of vital sectors where foreign expertise is indispensable.

Further clarity on how exemptions will be applied — and which other professions might qualify — has yet to be provided.

However, with Indian professionals making up more than 70% of H-1B visa holders, the policy shift and potential carve-outs are being closely monitored by both the medical community and the wider immigrant workforce.
