Editorial: AP Congress With YSR And Without YSR

It’s a black day.
It’s a sorrowful hour.
It’s a grief stricken minute.
It’s a tearful moment.

The date September 2nd will go down in history as the darkest day for the members of the Congress party not just in the state of Andhra Pradesh but also in the entire nation. Not only that, it will also remain in the memory of the many Telugu hearts for a bitter reason. We are talking about the sudden and shocking demise of chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy which happened due to a helicopter crash at the Veligonda hill in the Nallamala forest.

Now, many are trying to evaluate and see what the situation will be like for the Congress pre and post the presence of YSR. He has always been known for his smiling presence and no matter how tough the situation was, he was there with his smile to walk away through problems. On the other hand, he had the ability to come up with a good counter to every satire that was thrown towards him or his government.

It must be said that YSR was able to get together the entire leaders of Congress into one unit and took them to victory in the recent election as well. Now, the biggest dilemma is who will be the next Chief Minister of our state. While many have been looking at the Congress veteran Jaipal Reddy as the possible choice, there is also a talk about having Y S Jagan in his father’s shoes. But then, there are also doubts over his political experience and exposure and on the other hand, doubts exist as to how many in the party would actually accept Jaipal Reddy as the CM.

For now, the grand old man Rosaiah has been named as the caretaker CM but then, a decision has to be taken soon on this to stabilize the system. The loss of YSR is a severe blow to the Congress party and the state administration. This has also shaken the pillars in the center since it was YS who was able to get the government of Dr Manmohan Singh back to power with his thirty odd MP seats.

The political analysts believe that it would be a while before another leader like YS would emerge for the Congress and it remains to be seen who will take the Herculean task of leading the state forward keeping behind all the pains and sorrow.
