A solar eclipse is a thing of awe and wonderment, not least for the superstition it inspires. People cancel outings and prefer to stay at home for the duration of the eclipse lest some ‘evil’ befall them.
The solar eclipse on Wednesday morning is forcing people to rejig their plans. The eclipse will cover 80 per cent of the sun in Hyderabad. Housewives are fretting because their maids are refusing to step out of their homes during that time. Last heard, many maids were conferring among themselves to find out the exact timings of the eclipse.
Milkmen and paper delivery boys have also decided to skip their morning duties. So expect to read this story in the paper and sip your morning cup of coffee slightly later than usual today. Some anxious women have also decided to avoid deliveries during the eclipse if they can. At Fernandez Maternity Hospital in Abids, some pregnant women are avoiding deliveries on this day.
“They are scared to come due to the eclipse because they feel something will happen to the babies,” confirmed a doctor.
The story is the same at other hospitals, though not too drastic. At Dangoria Maternity and Nursing Home, Dr Leela narrated an interesting anecdote about a couple who wanted to have their baby during the eclipse. “Some years ago this couple wanted the delivery to occur during the eclipse to see what happened to the child,” she said. “Till now the child has not come to any harm,” added Dr. Leela.
Dr Habiba of Kirloskar Hospital confirmed that there were fewer patients registered in the maternity ward on the day of the eclipse than other days. “But we have not told our patients anything about the eclipse or to stay away on that day,” she explained.
