$7B Loss: USA's Education Market Bleeding

The number of international students coming to the US has dropped sharply, mainly due to stricter immigration rules under the Trump administration.

Over 6,000 student visas were canceled this year for reasons like overstaying or “support for terrorism.” In July 2025, fewer than 79,000 students arrived, a 28% fall from the previous month.

Indian students, the largest group with 332,000 enrolled in 2023–24, saw a 46% drop, while Chinese students fell by 26%.

Since India and China are the biggest sources of international students, US colleges are losing many new enrollments. This is the fourth month in a row that student arrivals have gone down compared to last year.

This decline is expected to cost US colleges about $7 billion and affect over 60,000 jobs.

Schools also expect a 30% drop in tuition revenue, showing how much the stricter visa rules are hitting higher education and the economy.
