60-Day Visa Shock Sends Couple Packing

60-Day Visa Shock Sends Couple Packing

An Indian couple living in the United States has decided to return to India after both of them lost their jobs, with the husband recently being hit by the latest Oracle layoffs.

The woman shared their situation online, saying that while she was laid off in October 2025, her husband was among those affected in Oracle’s recent global layoffs, which reportedly impacted around 30,000 employees worldwide.

She explained that the situation has now become more urgent because her husband’s 60-day grace period to stay in the US on his visa begins from April 11, 2026.

According to her, he does not have PERM or I-140 approval, which means there is no option to extend or renew his H-1B visa through that route.

She also said that she has been out of work since her own layoff and had been waiting for her H-4 visa, but with time running out and no major immigration relief in sight, the couple has now chosen to move back to India.

Calling it a difficult but practical decision, she said they are now planning to return to India by July and start rebuilding their lives from scratch.

The woman asked others online for advice on how to manage the transition, especially in terms of finding jobs in India, planning their return timeline, and understanding how long it may take to settle professionally after coming back.

As the post gained attention, many social media users responded with practical and encouraging advice.

Several people said that while the job market in India is not perfect, it is still better than the current situation in the US, especially for professionals with the right skills and experience.

Some advised the couple to start applying for jobs immediately, even before leaving the US, and to update their resumes with an Indian phone number to improve response from recruiters.

Others suggested that the couple should first give themselves some time to mentally recover and plan the move properly, instead of rushing into panic decisions.

The story has resonated with many NRIs, especially at a time when layoffs, visa pressure, and uncertain immigration pathways are making life increasingly difficult for Indian professionals in the US.

What has made the situation more striking is the timing.

Just days after the layoffs, Oracle announced the appointment of Hilary Maxson as its new Chief Financial Officer, with a reported compensation package worth $29.7 million.

According to reports, her package includes a $950,000 annual salary, a $2.5 million bonus opportunity, and a $26 million equity grant.

That contrast — large-scale layoffs on one side and massive executive pay on the other — has only added to the frustration felt by many affected employees and their families.

For this NRI couple, the American chapter now appears to be closing and a new, uncertain journey back home is about to begin.
