Sumitra Mahajan elected Lok Sabha speaker

New Delhi: BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan was Friday unanimously elected the Lok Sabha Speaker.

Her name was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and seconded by BJP patriarch L.K. Advani and union Home Minister Rajnath Singh among many others.

Mahajan, eighth-time MP, is the second woman to be elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker after Meira Kumar.

She is the second woman Speaker of Lok Sabha; Meira Kumar, who presided over the House for the last five years, was the first.

Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, the senior-most member of the House, had taken oath as the pro-tem Speaker at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday, June 4, the day the 16th Lok Sabha convened for the first time.

Till a regular Speaker is elected, a pro-tem Speaker administers oath to a new House and conducts proceedings.

The President will address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Monday, June 9. The week-long session ends on June 11.
