New Delhi: About 20 MLAs of Telugu Desam Party today fell at the feet of Jairam Ramesh pleading him not to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, an act that left the Union minister utterly embarrassed.
One of the MLAs even rolled down on the ground when the car of another Union minister V Narayanasamy was being driven into the Home Ministry while few other TDP legislators damaged the red bacon atop his vehicle.
The scene was created when the ministers were on their way to the North Block, housing the Home Ministry, to attend the meeting of the Group of Ministers to finalise the draft Telangana Bill.
"Sir, please save Andhra Pradesh. Please do not bifurcate Telangana. Please do something...," the MLAs were pleading Ramesh, who was about the enter the North Block.
An embarrassed Ramesh was rescued by CISF and Delhi Police personnel deployed there and escorted inside.
The MLA, who rolled down on the ground in front of Narayanasamy's car, was forcibly removed from the spot by the security personnel, who also escorted the Minister inside the Home Ministry.
A few agitated TDP MLAs also partially damaged the red bacon atop Narayanasamy's car.
TDP MLA P Keshav said the move to table the draft Telangana Bill in Parliament without Andhra Pradesh Assembly's consent was "unconstitutional".
"Parliament has no over-riding powers. Assembly and Parliament are equivalent," he said, referring to rejection of the draft Telangana Bill by the state Assembly.
Officials said Police is contemplating action against the TDP MLAs for the incident in front of the high-security Home Ministry, where prohibitory orders are already in place.
"The MLAs have violated the prohibitory orders and liable for action," an official said. (PTI)
