Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the 'Land Acquisition Bill' as a prestigious issue and was not willing to compromise on it.
In fact, three trade unions affiliated to the RSS opposed the Bill, yet Modi was unmoved. Then why did Modi finally compromise and why did the BJP back down on the ‘Land Acquisition Bill’?
The answer is : the upcoming Bihar election. Going ahead with the Bill at this point in time could spell electoral disaster for the BJP in underdeveloped and agrarian Bihar.
After the Delhi debacle, critics of Modi said that the Modi wave is on the downslide. If BJP loses in Bihar too, that perception would only get strengthened.
