Metro rail chief backtracks: What's up?

Larsen and Toubro, which created a sensation of sorts by threatening to drop out from the prestigious Hyderabad Metro Rail Project as was published in a section of media, backtracked on the same and declared that it was not withdrawing from the execution of the project.

The development came after L&T Metro Rail chairman V B Gadgil met Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao at Secretariat on Wednesday.

Gadgil admitted that he had indeed written a letter to the Telangana government on the problems in execution of the metro rail project, but said he was embarrassed at the way it was leaked only to a couple of Telugu newspapers (read: Eenadu and Andhra Jyothy).

He alleged that some hostile media houses were publishing baseless news stories to defame the L&T and the Telangana Government.

But Gadgil did not deny the contents of the letter. According to highly placed sources, the L&T was upset with the way the politicians in power were trying to harass the company by creating various hurdles.

Apparently, the company had to grease several palms in the government to get the clearances. And the latest hurdle in the form of change in alignment in some areas has come as the last nail in the L&T coffin.

Sources said KCR quickly entered the scene after seeing the media reports and tried to undo the damage.

He suspected that the L&T authorities deliberately leaked the letter to Andhra media to embarrass him. So, he called Gadgil and tried to settle the “issues” in an amicable way.
