Opinion: The Educated 'Illiterates'!

There is a popular proverb in Telugu: 'Rameswaram vellina senisvaram vadalledu'. That pretty much sums up the mindsets of a select bunch of Telugu people settled in the United States. They may be living in the developed world, yet their attitudes are rooted in the 'Dark Ages'.

The issue in question is the celebration of the 10th anniversary of slain factionist Paritala Ravi in the US, recently.

Hundreds of people died in the faction wars between Paritala Ravi and other feudal lords of Rayalaseema. Of course, as is the case with any other factionist, Paritala Ravi also furthered his ambitions behind the cushion of ‘people’s sufferings’, emerging as one of the most dreaded warlords of Rayalaseema in the process.

So ruthless was he that on one occasion he had a bomb planted inside the television set of a rival on ‘Sankranthi’ and delivered to the latter’s house.  Five people were killed in the explosion, including the mother and sister of his rival, an act which was to result in the culmination of Ravi’s own murder.

The point to be emphasized here is that Ravi was no Gandhi and his brand of politics are not worthy of eulogy. He was used as a political tool by NTR to counter the other factionists in Rayalaseema. Therefore, it is understandable for the people living in Ravi-dominated areas and henchmen of Ravi to be celebrating his anniversary.

For they are illiterates! But, for people who have settled in the United States and are in respectable positions to simply eulogizing the likes of Ravi solely for caste based reasons is utterly disgusting!

Such actions would only vitiate the harmonious atmosphere among Telugu people and probably result in celebrations of a ‘Maddelacheruvu Suri’ anniversary.

NRI’s surely ought to celebrate personalities who have contributed to the glory and development of the Telugu people, not factionists and criminals.

What next? A US postal stamp on Ravi? And somebody please give that actor, Vivek Oberoi some work! He is making people sick by frequently turning up at Anantpur his ‘Rakhta Charitra’ get-up.
