Fact Sheet: The Pseudo-Seculars

Fact Sheet: The Pseudo-Seculars

The front page of the leading English daily today rang out loud with the headline “Muslim share of population up 0.8%, Hindus' down 0.7%”.

Now, what message does the newspaper intend to communicate with this headline? Just facts or is there something between the lines?

And in response to this alarming headline, when a BJP politician or someone from the Sangh Parivar calls for Hindu women to bear more children, the same newspaper rises up as a champion of secular rights and laments the saffronisation of the nation.

If the newspaper and other such publications consider themselves to be truly secular, then why do they bother reporting increases and decreases in population of different religions in the first place?

If the Muslim population increases, does it mean the minorities are safe and vice-versa?
