Appeal For Help: Laxman Dusa

Appeal For Help: Laxman Dusa

On December 9th 2010, 33 years old Laxman Dusa suffered a major stroke in his brain stem due to a blood clot in the pons area. The stroke has left him badly paralyzed. He is suffering from an extremely rare and debilitating condition known as '"locked-in syndrome".

Laxman cannot move, cannot speak, cannot swallow food and is fighting to keep his dignity. Otherwise, the stroke has cruelly spared virtually all of Laxman's conscious and unconscious processing systems. His memory, his reason, and his emotions are all intact. He can see and hear and feel emotions - and feel pain - but he has no way of communicating except by moving his eyelids up-and-down. He is an active mind trapped inside an unresponsive body.

What is Locked in Syndrome:
Locked-in syndrome usually results in quadriplegia and the inability to speak in otherwise cognitively intact individuals. Those with locked-in syndrome may be able to communicate with others through coded messages by blinking or moving their eyes, which are often not affected by the paralysis. The symptoms are similar to those of sleep paralysis. Patients who have locked-in syndrome are conscious and aware, with no loss of cognitive function. They can sometimes retain proprioception and sensation throughout their bodies. Some patients may have the ability to move certain facial muscles, and most often some or all of the extra ocular eye muscles. Individuals with the syndrome lack coordination between breathing and voice.  This restricts them from producing voluntary sounds, though the vocal cords are not paralyzed.

After a two year battle with life, Laxman is finally discharged home and is seeking our help to get better and move forward with his life. His wife Madhuri has been with him 24/7 since she married him and dedicated her life to him. She slept in the chair next to his bed in the hospital for two years and communicated and translated the meaning of his eye movements to the hospital staff. Laxman can only communicate with eye movements.

NATS (North America Telugu Society) came forward to help Laxman in this time of need. Presently he needs the following:

Power Wheel Chair (Head sensor driven), RTI Neuro Bike, Standing Frame, Bio Ness for hands and Motomed viva 1-2 functional electrical stimulation.  Apart from this he also needs daily physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

This is going to cost about 150,000.00 dollars at this time. Please be generous and donate to this cause and help Laxman to make a quick recovery. NATS goal is to touch one life at a time.
