Veteran CPI Leader Sudhakar Reddy Dies at 83

Senior Communist leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away at the age of 83 in Hyderabad on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

A prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (CPI), he served as the party’s national general secretary from 2012 to 2019.

Born in Mahbubnagar district, Reddy was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from the Nalgonda constituency, in 1998 and 2004.

He was widely respected for his commitment to grassroots activism and workers’ rights, and as chair of the parliamentary committee on labour, he championed social security benefits, improved working conditions, and access to education for children.

His political career began as a student leader in Kurnool and steadily rose through the ranks of the CPI before assuming the party’s national leadership.

Reddy’s contributions left a lasting imprint on leftist politics in Telangana and across India.

He is remembered as a principled parliamentarian and a tireless advocate for the marginalized.

“I was shocked to learn that Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, former CPI General Secretary and Member of Parliament, passed away this evening at 9 pm,” CPI leader K. Narayana said in a condolence message.
