Fresh unrest in T'gana with 'Marwari Go Back' slogan

Fresh unrest in T'gana with 'Marwari Go Back' slogan

For the last three days, an extensive campaign has been going on in the social media circles demanding that Marwaris living in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana should quit the state and go back to their native places in Gujarat.

There are sudden calls in some quarters for “Marwari Go Back” and they even called for shutdown in Amangal, citing claims that Marwaris were dominating businesses and that Telangana society would not tolerate it.

According to analysts, these tensions seem to be deliberately stoked, with vested interests working behind the scenes.

The BJP, sources say, will never support such campaigns. Instead, it will oppose and counter them. In fact, the Marwaris are staunch supporters of the BJP.

The Left parties have no history of such narrow politics, and the Congress, being a national party, does not propagate hatred toward people of any particular region.

On the contrary, chief minister Revanth Reddy has been inviting all communities, assuring them of protection and safety of their investments, and promising to transform Hyderabad into a truly global city.

So, there is a suspicion that the BRS could be indirectly fomenting unrest to create dissatisfaction against the Revanth Reddy government, even though it avoids openly showing its hand.

Analysts say the BRS is trying to capitalize on any opportunity to generate political headaches for the Congress.

The truth is, Marwaris are not newcomers to Telangana. They have been here since the Nizam era, and even earlier, arriving from across India and abroad.

Over decades, they have blended with local culture while retaining their distinct traditions, respecting Telangana’s way of life.

Like Gujaratis and Punjabis who thrive anywhere in the world, Marwaris have survived and prospered here too — but without seeking political power or exploiting local resources.

While the Andhra people were blamed for exploiting Telangana during the Telangana agitation, there was no such allegation against Marwaris as they neither looted resources nor insulted local culture.

Today, they run rice mills, construction businesses, contracts, security services, brick kilns, hotels, hospitals, supermarkets, sweet shops, jewelry stores, and more — contributing to the economy while living peacefully.

Hyderabad also thrives because of migrant workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bengal, and other states, without whom many essential services would grind to a halt.

Similarly, professionals from multiple regions work in sectors ranging from plumbing and electrical services to delivery, wellness, event management, and food. All of them proudly call Hyderabad home.

"What’s this nonsense of ‘Marwari Go Back’? If there are conspiracies to divide Hindu society, we will launch an agenda to protect Hindu castes and occupations. If you have the courage, say ‘Rohingyas Go Back’ instead,” BJP leader and Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay said.
