BC quota in local bodies: What will Revanth do?

The issue of providing 42% reservations for Backward Classes, which has stirred a nationwide debate, now appears to be reaching its final stage.

The Telangana government had passed a resolution in the assembly granting 42% reservations for BCs in the state. However, the Centre’s refusal to approve the bill sparked a major uproar.

In response, chief minister A Revanth Reddy mobilized support from his party MPs as well as INDIA bloc MPs to pressure the Centre. Besides, the chief minister, along with ministers, MPs, and MLAs, staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding approval for the BC reservations.

After the protest, the delegation planned to submit a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, but as the President did not grant an appointment, they accused the Modi government of blocking the implementation of the BC reservations.

The Chief Minister had earlier made it clear that the state would decide its next course of action if the Centre continued to delay approval.

With the pressure on the Centre yielding no results, the Telangana government has reportedly held internal discussions to finalize its strategy.

Sources indicate that both the party leadership and the government deliberated on the next steps regarding the implementation of the 42% reservations.

Speaking to the media, TPCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud said extensive discussions were held with a ministers’ sub-committee and a legal advisory committee.

The committees reportedly presented multiple options, and Revanth Reddy took a decision after evaluating their recommendations.

The committees have put forward three key options before the state government: Allocating 42% representation to BCs in elections through party-level measures; Implementing the reservations through a special Government Order (GO); Continuing to mount pressure on the Centre while waiting for formal approval.

With the local body elections approaching, pressure is mounting on the state government to act swiftly.

As a result, there is widespread anticipation over what decision the government will ultimately take regarding the implementation of BC reservations.
