Accused in Hyd rape-murder of 6-year-old commits suicide

The 30-year old man, Palakonda Raju, who allegedly raped and murdered a six-year-old tribal girl at Saidabad last week, committed suicide by jumping before a moving train on Thursday morning.

The body of Raju was found on the railway tracks at Pamunuru village near Station Ghanpur block of Jangaon district of Telangana.

The victim was identified by a tattoo on his right hand, which the police had widely publicised for tracking him.

"Just been informed by @TelanganaDGP Garu that the beast who raped the child has been traced & found dead on a railway track at station Ghanpur," IT Minister KT Rama Rao tweeted.

Raju had been absconding soon after he committed the ghastly crime at Singareni Colony at Saidabad on September 9.

The police constituted nine teams to search for him.

On Wednesday, the Hyderabad police issued a statement seeking people’s cooperation in tracking the accused, after the incident triggered a state-wide uproar.

He even announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for those who pass on information about Raju.

The police provided details of his identification including the tattoos on both his hands which read: “Mounika.”

He was also known to frequently sleep at bus stands and pavements, the police said in the statement.

The rape and murder of the tribal girl, daughter of a driver from Nalgonda district, took place at Singareni Colony near Saidabad on the night of September 9.

Hours after the parents lodged a complaint with the police, the girl’s body was found in the house of Raju, their neighbour. Post-mortem report later revealed that she was brutally raped and strangled to death.

The Hyderabad police booked a case of murder and rape case, besides under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

On Wednesday evening, state home minister Md Mahmood Ali and minister for women and child welfare Satyavathi Rathod called on the family and extended an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh. They also promised to provide them a double-bedroom house to the family.
