A high-profile drug bust by Telangana police in Hyderabad has unexpectedly turned into a controversy.
Putta Mahesh Yadav, the current TDP MP from Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly caught red-handed during a police raid.
Tests allegedly confirmed that he had consumed drugs. Although he was arrested, he was granted station bail within minutes and allowed to leave the premises.
This quick release has raised serious questions among the public about how drug-related cases are handled, especially when influential individuals are involved.
Public reaction to the incident has been intense and widespread.
“If this is the case, nobody will be afraid of drugs. All it takes is an arrest and station bail on the same day. Then how serious is the drugs issue in India?” says Subrahmanya Shankar, a software employee.
Many citizens feel that such incidents weaken the deterrence against drug abuse.
“Countries like Singapore and many Gulf nations consider drugs a very serious crime and even impose the death penalty. Because of that, the fear of punishment strongly exists there. This Hyderabad episode sends a message that drugs can be used freely in India and no serious charges will be applied,” says Spandana, a college lecturer.
Others believe the police did their job, but the system failed to support their effort.
“The police did a great thing by catching them. But what is the use? Their effort is nullified by the system. How can same day bail be granted in such a crime? An MP is, after all, a public servant. If the servant himself receives such privilege, what about the public, who are his masters? Can the system accept that?” asked Mohd Gilani, an auto driver.
Some people also suspect that political influence played a role in the outcome.
“Police said they granted station bail because Parliament sessions are scheduled for tomorrow. Ironically, the same MP may speak in Parliament tomorrow about eliminating drugs. The police reportedly escorted Mahesh Yadav away through a back route to avoid media attention and ensured he left safely in his car. Ultimately, it appears that the efforts of powerful Andhra leaders have worked,” said Raghupathi, a businessman from Hyderabad.
Journalists say this case reflects a deeper issue of political power affecting the justice system.
“As Vundavalli Arun Kumar recently remarked, it is "Central Jail for common people and Station Bail for beloved ones". People has every right to feel if this bail is issued just because of present Telangana government's comaradarie with AP's government. The TRS ex-MLA who was caught, would no be given the same treatment. He will be taken to task. Political power seems to be controlling the system, eroding the public’s trust and faith,” said a senior journalist from a media house.
Overall, the incident has sparked a wider debate about fairness, accountability and the message being sent to society.
On the whole, the granting of same-day station bail in this drug case has shocked not only people in the two Telugu states but also many others who have heard about the incident.
Critics say the episode has sent a deeply troubling message to the nation.
