SC agrees to examine Telangana issue, notice to Centre

New Delhi: Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana today came under judicial scrutiny with the Supreme Court agreeing to examine it and sought response from the Centre.

A bench headed by Justice H L Dattu issued notice to the Centre on a batch of petitions filed by several people, including former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Reddy, challenging bifurcation of the State.

On Thursday, Reddy moved the Supreme Court, seeking a direction to declare the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act for creation of Telangana as “unconstitutional for being violative of the basic structure of the Constitution of India”.

In a petition filed jointly by him and two other former ministers of his Cabinet, Reddy contended that the impugned enactment violated the basic feature of federalism.

“The President without applying mind, simply acted on the aid and advise of the Council of Ministers headed by the PM in introducing the Bill in Parliament after the state legislature returned the resolution dated January 30,” stated his petition, drawn by advocate A D N Rao.
