BJP Accepts Defeat On 'Land Acquisition Bill'

BJP Accepts Defeat On 'Land Acquisition Bill'

In a remarkable victory for the Congress and other Opposition Parties, the NDA led by the BJP has decided to withdraw all the amendments to the proposed Land Bill.

So the ‘social impact study’ clause will be back – as originally incorporated by the UPA in 2013.

There was no place for public opinion in the Bill and at least five categories of industries including industrial corridors and defence corridors were exempt from the clause of consent of nearly 80% affected people.

Narendra Modi was keen that the Bill be passed without any amendments but he has been forced to eat humble pie in the wake of a spirited opposition led by the Congress.

The Bill was passed in Lok Sabha but the government does not have a majority in Rajya Sabha.

The NDA can issue an ordinance, but with the country’s elite divided over such an important issue, the ordinance route would have resulted in immense negative publicity to the BJP.
