Tesla’s entry into India has not gone as planned. Four months after its launch, nearly one third of its imported Model Y cars remain unsold.
Out of about 300 vehicles shipped to India, around 100 are still waiting for buyers. Many customers who had shown early interest or even made bookings later withdrew.
To reduce this unsold stock, Tesla has started offering discounts of up to Rs 2,00,000 on select Model Y variants.
High import duties of up to 110 percent have made the cars very expensive.
Buyers are also comparing Tesla with cheaper electric vehicles from brands like BMW and BYD, which offer competitive features at lower prices.
This slow start in India comes during a global slowdown for Tesla. Sales have fallen worldwide due to strong competition and reduced subsidies.
In India, high prices and limited brand presence have turned Tesla’s entry into a serious business challenge.
