Fake Weddings Redefine Kerala's Party Culture

Fake Weddings Redefine Kerala's Party Culture

Kerala’s wedding traditions are undergoing dramatic transformation. Once known for their simplicity, they have now expanded into grand, multi-day affairs inspired by North Indian customs like Mehendi, Haldi and Sangeeth.

Riding this wave of cultural borrowing comes a surprising twist, the “fake wedding party.”

These ticketed events offer the glitter of a wedding without the rituals, family obligations, or the pressure of a real marriage.

Guests arrive in festive attire, dance to Bollywood tracks, enjoy lavish food and pose for pictures in a staged, carnival, like setting.

The state’s first fake wedding was hosted in Kochi in July 2025, drawing over 350 participants, including influencers, professionals and visitors from outside Kerala.

The event recreated a North Indian wedding atmosphere with dhol beats, a staged baraat on a truck, colorful décor and professional photographers, creating an immersive experience.

While similar to Bengaluru’s vibrant editions, Kochi’s version was more music driven and compact. Attendees praised its novelty, though noted it lacked the extensive food and variety of real weddings.

For Kerala’s youth, however, they provide recreation, social visibility and a taste of grandeur without actual ritual. Novelty, curiosity and social media appeal drive their popularity, signaling a new chapter in Kerala’s nightlife and party culture.

Many hope this trend spreads to other cities too. After all, everything is about enjoyment and now even fake wedding–themed parties.
