Why has KCR gone silent on Tejaswi Surya remarks?

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Tejaswi Surya’s explosive comments on the floor of Lok Sabha comparing bifurcation of combined Andhra Pradesh with partition of India has evoked strong protests in Telangana.

The Congress party has taken it up very seriously and registered their protest in Delhi as well in Hyderabad.

State BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar wrote to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla asking for expunging of Surya’s comments on Telangana formation and sack him from Lok Sabha.

He even lodged a complaint with the Telangana DGP seeking action against Karnataka MP.

On Friday, the Congress party ranks are planning to lay siege to the BJP office in Hyderabad to register their protest.

Compared to the Congress, the reaction of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which claims to be the champion of Telangana, has been rather subdued.

BRS leaders like T Harish Rao, K T Rama Rao and Dasoju Sravan issued statements condemning the BJP MP’s comments, but have not announced any major agitations or protests.

KTR alleged that the BJP has displayed its "hatred" towards the formation of Telangana.

He said the BJP has no respect for the identity of Telangana and condemned the comparison of the state's formation with the Partition of India as "utterly foolish" and “arrogant.”

He accused BJP leaders of repeatedly insulting the self-respect of Telangana people and the sacrifices of martyrs who fought for statehood.

From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to MP Tejasvi Surya, he alleged, BJP leaders have consistently demonstrated anti-Telangana sentiments.

What is surprising is the unusual silence of BRS president and former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tejaswi Surya’s comments.

While the BRS leaders often claim that KCR is the “Father of Telangana,” there has not been a single word from him condemning the BJP MP’s comments.

“Had it been old KCR, the entire Telangana would have erupted in protests, targeting the BJP. A single statement from him would have created tremors across the country. But it is unfortunate that KCR chose to remain silent even on such controversial statements from the BJP leaders,” a party leader said.

An analyst said maybe, KCR doesn’t want to antagonise the top BJP leadership by attacking Tejaswi Surya with strong words, as everybody knows a call from KCR against BJP will have a lot of impact.

“Apparently, KCR is hoping for a deal with the BJP and that is why, he has remained silent, while his party leaders confined themselves to issuing statements against Surya,” the analyst added.
