When Is AP Formation Day?

Till last year, the Andhra Pradesh Formation Day used to be celebrated on November 1, as the State came into existence on this day in 1956.

Now that the State has been bifurcated and the Centre declaring June 2 as the Appointed Day for the Telangana formation, it is clear that the Telangana would celebrate its formation day on June 2. This was made clear by Governor E S L Narasimhan on Saturday when he said since bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh comes into effect from June 2, it will be the Telangana Formation Day.

But what about AP formation day? According to Governor, residuary State of Andhra Pradesh will come into being from June 8, when TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu will be sworn in as new CM, Narasimhan maintained. Till then the AP will be under President’s Rule. So, for all practical purposes, the AP government will form on June 8.

Now the question is when Naidu government would observe the AP formation day. As per the Act, on the Appointed Day, Telangana State is formed, which also amounts to AP coming into existence on the same day.

However, it continues to be under President’s Rule till June 8. It does not mean AP will be hanging in balance for six days. It remains to be seen how Naidu tackles this tricky situation.
