It looks like the Congress party is planning to give the Mallanna Sagar submergence issue a national angle by involving its top national leaders.
According to sources, the Congress high command had obtained a detailed report from the party leaders in Telangana on the Mallanna Sagar issue and felt that it had all the potential to become a national issue that would bring a lot of mileage to the party in the coming days.
In fact, it was the UPA government which had brought in the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had effectively used it to fight against the UP government in the past.
Sources said Rahul has now agreed to come to Medak to call on the farmers of affected villages and get the first hand information of the issue.
He would do a padayatra in these villages and speak to every family. The party is also planning to organise a Maha Dharna in Hyderabad and also in New Delhi highlighting the issue.
“If properly planned, the Mallanna Sagar issue can be turned into another Nandigram of West Bengal, where poor farmers were forcibly evicted in a similar manner,” a Congress leader said.
