Public Memory: A Curse For The Public

Public memory is short-lived and this is what emboldens politicians and celebrities to frequently exploit the masses time and again to the detriment of the latter.

In this era of 24/7 breaking news, there is so much being thrust upon the public and the media circus keeps the common man hooked with one sensation or the other so that he loses track of the egregious errors committed in the past by the biggies of society.

How else can one explain Salman Khan’s tweets in support of Yakub Memon?

The man’s popularity was at an all-time low after his conviction in the hit-and-run case. But he quickly diverted people’s attention through a media barrage of ‘Being Human’ activities and finally got them to focus on ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

The success of the film has once again emboldened him to preach to India. This is a common phenomenon even in Tollywood.

Chiranjeevi started the ‘Praja Rajyam’ which was supported by millions of his fans cutting across all kinds of social barriers.

He ended up ditching them all by selling his Party tickets which was subsequently routed at the hustings. He then merged his Party with the Congress, got the post of a Union Minister and promptly refused to resign for Samaikhyandhra.

Unforgivable acts of betrayal and a complete loss of credibility. So, what does he do? Get back to the medium that made him a star in the first place, courtesy of his 150th film.

The same can be said of Vijayashanti who is planning a comeback to reckoning following a political downfall.

Once their movies become successful, they can comfortably go back to duping the people again. And the people will allow themselves to be duped. Why? Because their memory is short-lived.
