Court Rejects Jagan Plea: What Next?

Court Rejects Jagan Plea: What Next?

In a big jolt, although not unexpected, the CBI special court on Monday rejected the petition of YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy seeking exemption from appearing in the court for a period of six months in the wake of his proposed padayatra scheduled to commence on November 2.

The CBI court is presently conducting the trial into the alleged illegal assets case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation and Jagan has been appearing in the court every Friday for the trial proceedings.

The court agreed with the contention of the CBI that Jagan was seeking exemption for six months only to delay the trial so as to gain political mileage in the next elections.

The court had earlier commented that Jagan could as well take a break from padayatra every Friday and appear for the trial.

Now, the question is what Jagan would do. Though he may immediately move the high court challenging the special court order, the possibility of getting the relief is bleak and the Supreme Court, too, would not like to interfere in the trial court proceedings.

The question before Jagan now is whether he would defer his padayatra for some more time till he exhausts all legal options or go ahead with padayatra from November 2 and take a break every Friday.

In the second option, he would have to make arrangements for travel from the place of his padayatra every Thursday evening.

He has to return to Hyderabad by Thursday night, attend the court on Friday and go back to the original place to resume his padayatra. But how far it is practically possible has to be seen.
