BMW or Scorpio for Modi?

BMW or Scorpio for Modi?

The Prime Minister of India normally uses the BMW convoy of vehicles. It started around 2003 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was persuaded to shift to BMW from the good old ‘Ambassador’ which until then had been the official vehicle for previous Prime Ministers.

The change was necessitated in view of the increased threat perceptions and upgrades which needed to be made to the vehicle of the Prime Minister. But Narendra Modi might change this trend as well.

Modi has been using a Scorpio right through his campaigning and the Mahindra Group which makes the Scorpio is hopeful that Modi will continue with it even after he takes charge as Prime Minister.

“It will be a matter of pride for us and the whole nation if our new PM continues to make the India-made Scorpio, his vehicle of choice,” said the Group in a statement.

The Company is willing to make suitable upgrades to the vehicle in line with the stringent requirements of the security apparatus mandated for the Prime Minister. For this purpose they will also have to convince the ‘Special Protection Group’ which is in charge of the Prime Minister’s security. But the primary approval will have to come from Modi. Will he oblige?
