Behind The Scene: Is This Anger justified?

The ‘High Court’ of Andhra Pradesh expressed its anger at a petition against the ‘loan waiver’ scheme to farmers and asked the petitioners not to make such submissions again.

It told the petitioner that society exists only because of the farmers and that there was nothing wrong in waiving off loans to farmers, especially when they were committing suicides.

With due respect to the judiciary, one does not have anything against the farmers personally.

But who will ultimately have to bear the burden of this loan waiver? Is it not the tax-paying people themselves who are already at the mercy of inflation on a massive upward trend?

Obviously, the politicians are not going to shell out the money from their own pockets for their populist schemes.

‘Loan Waiver’ is akin to a student failing his exams yet being promoted to the next class in return for his vote.

What is required is a thorough analysis of the socio-economic causes which are responsible for the miserable plight of our farmers today and thereby effectively administer the right solutions.

In this case, the farmers are not to be blamed for they are at the mercy of nature. Yet, doling out of freebies by corrupt politicians is not the answer either! Once the ‘loan waiver’ scheme gets implemented, the common man would undoubtedly have to suffer in the form of higher taxation and as for the politicians; do they pay any taxes at all?

One can’t help feeling that in its empathy for the poor farmers, for once, the honorable judiciary has failed to take a holistic view of things.
