After Poll Bargains Shame Congress

Election time is when a lot of money changes hands. Right from buying their tickets to buying their votes, politicians spend a lot of money at the time to make sure they are voted to power. And it’s not just one party, money tends to play an important role in the dealings of almost all political parties.

While this is common knowledge, what is surprising is that money continues to play an important role even after elections.

The Congress party faced a never-seen-before debacle during the recent elections. Despite giving away a separate Telangana state, it could not cash in on the effort.

Now, the party has lost face once again with a new controversy surrounding the selection of floor leaders for the assembly and legislative council.

While announcing the names of Jana Reddy and D Srinivas as the floor leaders of assembly and legislative council respectively, the Congress had said that it had made a unanimous decision. However, some Congress men have openly criticized the party and condemned the fact that a lot of money was exchanged behind closed doors before finalizing the names of Jana Reddy and D Srinivas.

In fact, Congress MLC Rajalingam has alleged on television that he was offered Rs 10 lakh for not opposing the candidature of D Srinivas. This comes as a final blow to the already tattered image of Congress party in the state.

Despite the claims of senior Congressmen that the appointments were based on a unanimous decision by all Congressmen, people have started despising the party for indulging in such cheap behind-the-door tactics.

There is common opinion that DK Aruna would have been a better choice when compared to Jana Reddy as she has a style of her own while shredding opponents. Similarly, in the case of D Srinivas, he lost during the recent elections. While he is a senior member, he could not retain his seat and many Congressmen are resenting his appointment.

People have shown that they no longer have any confidence in the Congress party. But that doesn’t seem to have taught the oldest party of India any lessons. Their latest deal-making isn’t going down well with people. Time the party reviewed its style of functioning and made amends.
