Why Did SEC Leak WhatsApp Chat To Media?

Why Did SEC Leak WhatsApp Chat To Media?

It looks like Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar has decided to defame the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government and show it in poor light in connection with the conduct of local body elections.

It was evident from the way Nimmagadda has leaked the WhatsApp conversation between him and principal secretary in chief minister’s office Praveen Prakash to the media a couple of days ago.

The other day, Nimmagadda called for an all-party meeting on October 28 to discuss the possibility of conducting elections to urban and rural local bodies, which were halted in March this year on the pretext of Coronavirus pandemic.

Though the state government submitted an affidavit in the high court stating that the situation is not conducive to hold the local body elections now because of the high intensity of Coronavirus, Nimmagadda is on holding polls.

Apparently to discuss the issue, Praveen Prakash sent a WhatsApp message to Nimmagadda asking him to attend a meeting convened in the CMO on Monday. This has angered Nimmagadda, who questioned the propriety of a CMO official summoning the SEC, a Constitutional authority, to attend the meeting.

He even threatened to take this issue to the notice of the high court. Praveen Prakash said he had sent the message to the SEC by mistake and that it was meant for SEC secretary Vani Mohan. But Nimmagadda objected to it again and said the government cannot ask any SEC official to attend any meeting.

While this was purely a WhatsApp chat between Nimmagadda and Praveen Prakash, one wonders how this has come out in the media. Needless to say, the chat was leaked to the media from Nimmagadda’s office.

One can easily understand the motive behind this leak. Nimmagadda has declared a virtual war against the Jagan government and he is using every opportunity to defame and demean the government!
