The Supreme Court on Friday declined to grant anticipatory bail to Sajjala Bhargava Reddy, former social media convenor of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), in connection with cases related to objectionable posts on social media.
However, the court granted him interim protection from arrest for two weeks and directed him to approach the trial court during this period.
During the hearing, a bench comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice SVN Bhatti expressed strong disapproval of Bhargava’s conduct and took serious objection to the nature of the posts he had shared.
“Do you think we cannot understand the meaning behind your posts? Do you believe we cannot comprehend your intent? Those posts crossed all limits. A wrong is a wrong, regardless of who commits it,” the bench stated.
Emphasizing the need for accountability, the court added, “The system will not overlook such acts — it will punish them. Don’t assume that bail will be easily granted in cases involving social media misuse. If granted indiscriminately, it would encourage recklessness.”
