Pithapuram Varma dismisses Narayana's cheap talk

A leaked audio clip of Andhra Pradesh municipal administration minister Dr Ponguru Narayana has sparked a major political row, with the minister allegedly making disparaging remarks against Pithapuram’s former MLA S V S N Varma, a long-time Telugu Desam Party (TDP) loyalist.

The leaked audio, reportedly from a teleconference held with Nellore city leaders, discloses Narayana claiming that “Varma has been made zero in Pithapuram”, suggesting a deliberate move to sideline him for the sake of coalition harmony with Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan.

According to the clip, Narayana allegedly stated, “We have completely neutralized Varma only for Pawan Kalyan’s sake. There are frequent clashes between the two, and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed Varma to remain silent.”

The minister further claimed that Chandrababu Naidu had personally warned Varma not to make public statements without coordination and that Jana Sena’s local unit should take the lead in the constituency’s communication.

“There are strict instructions from the Chief Minister — no one should speak out of line,” Narayana is heard saying.

In response, Varma dismissed the minister’s claims, asserting that his 23-year journey with the TDP was proof of his loyalty.

“I’ve always been a firebrand for TDP. I don’t react to anyone’s cheap talk. Everyone in Pithapuram knows who Varma is,” he said.

He made it clear that he had high regards for Chandrababu Naidu and Lokesh and everybody was very much aware of that. He indirectly challenged Narayana to produce video evidence of the alleged comments.

The audio leak has now snowballed into a full-blown controversy, with opposition parties seizing upon it as proof of rifts within the TDP–Jana Sena alliance.

Political analysts say the remarks could strain relations in key constituencies ahead of upcoming local body elections.
