No Going Back On Andhra Council Abolition

The YSR Congress party government in Andhra Pradesh led by chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy adopted a resolution in the state assembly way back in January 2020 seeking abolition of state legislative council and sent it to the Centre for approval.

Even as the Union home ministry has been sitting over the file on the abolition of legislative council for nearly one-and-a-half months, the chief minister has been filling up the vacancies arising in the council for various reasons with his party leaders.

And last week, the YSRC gained majority seats in the state legislative council and this led to the talk that the Jagan government has conveniently ignored the proposal it had sent to the Centre for abolition of the upper house.

However, on Monday, senior YSRC leader and state government’s advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy made it clear that the government was committed to its decision to abolish the legislative council.

“We are not going back on our stand. The ball is in the Centre’s court. But we shall not bring pressure on the Centre to abolish the council by repeatedly taking up the issue whenever we go to Delhi,” he asserted.

Sajjala said if the Centre took any decision on the abolition of the council, the state government would welcome it.

“And all those who have now been elected to the council will lose their posts. We are not worried about it,” he said.

He was reacting to a letter written by rebel YSRC MP K Raghurama Krishnam Raju to Jagan stating that the state government should insist on the abolition of the legislative council, instead of rehabilitating the party leaders in the vacant posts.

Raju offered to lobby with the Centre for the council abolition as a responsible party MP, if Jagan directed him to do so.

Meanwhile, four MLCs who were appointed under the Governor’s quota – Lella Appi Reddy, Thota Trimurthulu, Moshen Raju and Ramesh Yadav – took oath as MLCs on Monday. Protem chairman Balasubrahmanyam administered oath of office and secrecy with the newly-nominated MLCs.
