The latest exercise undertaken by the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh to restructure revenue divisions and mandals in line with the new district boundaries is said to be aimed at disturbing the vote bases of YSR Congress party.
According to sources, the cabinet sub-committee, which is studying key proposals, including the adjustment of assembly constituency boundaries, is focussing on the revenue divisions where the YSRCP is strong.
By disturbing them in the name of reorganisation, the TDP-led coalition is planning to curtail the influence of the YSRCP, though on record, the officials say the move is aimed at ensure administrative balance and regional equity, besides streamlining governance and aligning political and revenue jurisdictions.
Sources said the committee is considering granting revenue division status to larger assembly constituencies, as part of a long-term plan factoring in potential seat redistribution and expansion.
Officials presented reports highlighting that certain constituencies — such as Udayagiri — currently span across multiple revenue divisions.
The cabinet sub-committee suggested that each constituency should ideally fall within a single revenue division for better administration.
Preliminary discussions also touched upon creating new revenue divisions in Udayagiri, Madakasira, Kandukur, Addanki, and Punganur constituencies, where the YSRCP is relatively stronger.
The sub-committee has sought reports from district collectors and instructed the revenue department to prepare proposals accordingly.
Additionally, the sub-committee is examining proposals to reassign some mandals and divisions to other districts, to better reflect geographic and socio-economic realities.
Political observers say the reorganisation, if implemented before 2029, could have significant electoral implications, as it aligns with commitments made during the 2024 polls and strengthens the ruling coalition’s regional foothold.
