Naidu takes potshots at overweight RRR

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is always considered a serious person with rare quality of sense of humour. But sometimes, he tries to bring out his best humour.

On Tuesday, Naidu sparked laughter in the assembly during his reply to a debate on the medical and health department with his witty comments, pointing out to deputy speaker K Raghu Ramakrishna Raju.

He remarked: “Human lifespan is 120 years. But by the age of 40, we are consuming food meant for 120 years. This applies particularly to you, Mr. Deputy Speaker!”

The comment, directed at Ramakrishna Raju, had both him and the MLAs breaking into laughter.

Naidu said food is medicine and the kitchen is the pharmacy. He urged people to follow this principle.

“Neither Prime Minister Modi nor I have ever taken leave due to ill-health. I know most illnesses arise from overeating,” he said.

Calling upon the people to change their lifestyle, Naidu suggested that they should reduce consumption of sugar, salt, and cooking oil as much as possible.

“Peaceful living and eight hours of sleep are essential. In hospitals, room rents have become costlier than treatment itself. We are working to ensure every individual’s health data is with the government,” Naidu said.

After Naidu completed his speech, Raghu Ramakrishna Raju expressed optimism that “Healthy Andhra Pradesh” would progress towards the 120-year lifespan granted by God.

With a touch of humour, he added: “I will also follow the suggestions, though you told me a little late. Our Achchennaidu and I will definitely practice them.”

Naidu further said: “No matter how busy you are, never stop exercising. Some people may look fit but suffer health problems. Back in 1997, I used to tell police officers — if anyone has a belly, go exercise immediately, or I won’t spare you next time.”

He also pointed out that many doctors themselves are patients. They share their knowledge with others but don’t practice it. MLAs should first set an example.

“Eat nutritious food in moderation. Live long and happily. When you go home, sleep peacefully. In the morning, no matter how much work there is, practice yoga or exercise for 45 minutes to an hour. No hard work — do smart work. Everything is virtual now. Whatever you do, do it positively,” he said.
